How to connect the multimode fiber optic cable in the main link

Connecting a multimode fiber optic cable requires careful preparation, precise termination, and thorough testing to ensure reliable signal transmission.

Step 1: Plan and Prepare

Before connecting, plan the cable route to avoid tight bends, excessive tension, or interference from other infrastructure. Ensure the fiber type (OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, or OM5) matches the network requirements for bandwidth and distance . Gather the necessary tools: fiber strippers, cleavers, isopropyl alcohol, lint-free swabs, mechanical or fusion splicing equipment, and inspection microscopes .

Step 2: Strip and Clean the Fiber

Use a fiber optic stripper to remove the outer jacket and buffer coating, exposing the glass core. Avoid touching the core directly. Clean the exposed fiber with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free swab, inspecting under a microscope to ensure no dirt, oils, or defects remain .

Step 3: Cleave the Fiber

Cleave the fiber to produce a precise, perpendicular end face. Proper cleaving is critical for minimizing signal loss. Use a fiber cleaver, applying only the necessary tension, and inspect the cleaved end under magnification to confirm a clean cut .

Step 4: Terminate the Fiber

Depending on your setup, terminate the fiber using either mechanical connectors (e.g., LC, SC) or fusion splicing:

  • Mechanical connectors: Insert the cleaved fiber into the connector, ensuring proper alignment and secure locking .
  • Fusion splicing: Align the fiber ends in a fusion splicer, which melts and fuses the fibers together for a permanent joint .

Step 5: Connect to Network Equipment

Once terminated, connect the fiber to patch panels, switches, or other network devices. Ensure the connectors are clean and properly seated to prevent signal degradation .

Step 6: Test the Link

Use an Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) or Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS) to verify the link quality. Check for excessive loss, reflections, or bends that could affect performance. Document the results for compliance with standards such as ANSI/TIA-568 .
