How to install the grounding terminal of the distribution box

Proper grounding of a distribution box ensures safety, prevents electrical faults, and maintains low-resistance connections between all components and the earth.

Steps for Installing a Grounding Terminal

1. Locate the Grounding Bar or Terminal Open the distribution box and identify the grounding bar, often marked with a PE (Protective Earth) symbol or grounding plate. This is the designated point for connecting all grounding wires inside the box . 2. Prepare the Ground Wire Use a yellow-green insulated copper wire with a cross-sectional area meeting local electrical codes (commonly 6 mm² or 10 AWG depending on the region), . Strip the insulation for the required length to expose the copper conductor. 3. Connect the Ground Wire Attach the ground wire to the PE bar or grounding terminal using a screw or bolt. Ensure the connection is tight and secure, using a screwdriver or wrench. For stainless steel enclosures, apply a small amount of conductive grease to prevent corrosion and maintain low contact resistance . Use serrated or star washers to pierce any oxide layer and ensure good electrical contact . 4. Ground Electrical Components If the distribution box contains electrical components that require grounding, connect each component to the PE bar using copper wires. This ensures all internal equipment is safely grounded . 5. Connect to Main Grounding Electrode Run a grounding wire from the distribution box's grounding bar to the main grounding electrode or central grounding point. The total ground resistance should be less than 25 ohms for general installations, or less than 0.1 ohm for industrial systems . Multiple rods or conductors may be required if resistance exceeds the standard. 6. Verify the Connection After installation, measure the resistance between the distribution box and the main grounding electrode using a multimeter. Ensure the connection is continuous and low-resistance. Re-tighten bolts and clean contact surfaces if resistance is high .

Additional Precautions

  • Avoid double-tapping neutrals on the grounding bar; each connection should be dedicated .
  • Ensure all metal parts of the enclosure, including doors and panels, are bonded using braided copper tape or additional grounding wires .
  • Maintain clear labeling of all grounding connections for inspection and maintenance .
