  • Spanning Tree Alternatives: If using VSX/VSS, traditional STP can be minimized or disabled, as MC-LAG mitigates loops. Otherwise, configure RSTP or MST and designate primary and secondary root bridges on the core switches .

Firewall Integration

  • When connecting dual-core switches to a firewall, configure aggregated interfaces on both the firewall and the switches. Enable LACP on the aggregated group to allow both uplinks to function as a single logical interface .
  • Assign the same configuration (IP, VLAN, management profile) to each interface in the aggregate group to maintain consistency and high availability .

Layer 3 Considerations

  • Routing protocols: Implement OSPF or EIGRP between the core switches and upstream devices to control preferred paths and provide failover .
  • Default route advertisement: Ensure both cores advertise the default route to downstream switches and firewalls, allowing traffic to reroute automatically if one core fails .
