Fire pumps require dedicated, reliable electrical distribution with proper controllers, wiring, and disconnects to ensure continuous operation during emergencies.

Fire Pump Electrical Requirements

Fire pumps are critical for supplying water to fire protection systems and must operate reliably under all conditions. Electrical power for fire pumps must come from a reliable source capable of carrying the locked-rotor current of the pump motor(s), the full-load current of accessory equipment, and any jockey pumps used for pressure maintenance (NEC 695.3(A)), . Permitted sources include:

  • Separate remote service: A dedicated service independent of the building's normal power, minimizing unintentional interruptions .
  • On-site standby generator: Provides alternate power if the normal source fails, often with a mains changeover facility .
  • Combination of sources: Two or more individual sources or a source plus generator approved by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), .

Fire Pump Controllers and Disconnects

The fire pump controller starts, monitors, and protects the pump. Controllers must be listed for fire pump service and located to avoid water damage from the pump or piping . Key points include:

  • Single disconnect: Permitted between the power source and the controller or transfer switch, marked clearly as “Fire Pump Disconnecting Means” .
  • Overcurrent protection: Must carry the sum of the locked-rotor current of the largest pump motor and 100% of other motors and accessory equipment indefinitely .
  • Monitoring contacts: Controllers should provide signals for motor running, phase loss, phase reversal, alternate source connection, and system trouble .

Wiring and Conduit Requirements

Wiring from the controller to the pump motor must be in rigid metal conduit, intermediate metal conduit, electrical metallic tubing, liquidtight flexible metal conduit, or listed Type MC cable with impervious covering . Fittings must be listed for wet locations, and connections must use approved devices; twist-on, soldered, or insulation-piercing connectors are not allowed . Ground-fault protection is not permitted in the fire pump power circuit, though convenience GFCI outlets may be installed for maintenance .

Electrical Distribution Boxes

Electrical distribution boxes for fire pumps must:

  • Provide dedicated feeders to the pump controller.
  • Be protected against water and fire hazards.
  • Ensure voltage drop limits: ≤15% at motor start and ≤5% during running at 115% full-load current .
  • Coordinate short-circuit ratings with controllers, soft starters, or variable frequency drives when connected to generators .

Integration with Jockey Pumps

Jockey pumps maintain system pressure under normal conditions and cannot be fed from downstream of the fire pump controller. They may be connected to the normal distribution source or an emergency/optional standby source, but not through the fire pump controller .

Compliance and Standards

All installations must comply with:

  • NFPA 20: Standard for the Installation of Stationary Pumps for Fire Protection .
  • NEC Article 695: Electrical requirements for fire pump motors, controllers, and feeders .
  • NFPA 70: National Electrical Code for wiring, disconnects, and overcurrent protection . Proper design ensures continuous operation during fire events, minimizes downtime, and meets AHJ approval. Fire pump systems are typically integrated with controllers, distribution boxes, and auxiliary equipment as a coordinated package to maintain reliability and compliance .
