Revit cable tray elbows without

In Revit, you can create cable tray elbows without preloaded elbow families by using fabrication parts, custom families, or adjusting routing settings to manually control angles.

Using Fabrication Parts

Revit allows the use of MEP Fabrication Parts to create custom elbows that adapt to the routing of your cable tray. To do this:

  1. Go to the Systems Tab → Fabrication → open the MEP Fabrication Parts Pallet.
  2. If the pallet is empty, click Settings → configure Fabrication Configuration and Services to load Metric or Imperial content for your Revit version.
  3. After installing the content, you can place elbows that automatically adjust to the tray routing or manually modify their angles to match your design requirements .

Creating Custom Elbow Families

If preloaded elbow families are unavailable, you can create a custom cable tray elbow family:

  1. Open a new Family using the Cable Tray Fitting template.
  2. Model the elbow geometry using sweeps or extrusions to match the desired angle.
  3. Load the family into your project and place it at the junctions where the cable tray changes direction. This method allows full control over the elbow shape and size .

Adjusting Project Settings for Manual Routing

Revit can auto-generate elbows if the correct fitting families are loaded. Without them, you can:

  • Use straight segments and manually rotate or adjust the endpoints to simulate an elbow.
  • Modify the Cable Tray Settings under MEP Settings to control default angles and routing behavior.
  • Ensure the template used includes cable tray content; otherwise, elbows may not appear automatically .

Downloading Free BIM Objects

Several online resources provide free Revit cable tray families, including elbows:

  • BIMsmith Market offers downloadable cable tray Revit families with specifications and installation guides .
  • BIMobject provides manufacturer-specific cable tray objects compatible with Revit .
  • RevitCity also hosts user-contributed elbow families .

By combining these approaches—fabrication parts, custom families, and downloaded BIM objects—you can effectively manage cable tray elbows in Revit even when standard preloaded fittings are not available.
