To connect a server to a switch's optical port, you need a compatible optical network card in the server, an appropriate optical module, and a fiber optic cable matching the switch port type.

Server Requirements

Most servers do not have built-in optical ports on the motherboard. To enable optical connectivity, you need a PCIe network interface card (NIC) that supports optical modules. These NICs can handle speeds such as 1G, 10G, 25G, 40G, or 100G depending on your network requirements . Insert the NIC into the server's PCIe slot, then attach the corresponding optical module (SFP, SFP+, QSFP, or QSFP28) to the NIC.

Switch Requirements

Switches typically have SFP, SFP+, QSFP, or QSFP28 ports for optical connections . Ensure the optical module installed in the switch matches the NIC module in the server and the fiber type (single-mode OS2 or multimode OM3/OM4). Duplex fiber is standard, with separate strands for transmit and receive signals, and connections must be reversed between devices (A to B, B to A) to ensure proper communication .

Cabling and Connection

  1. Select the correct fiber cable: Use pre-terminated fiber patch cords or direct attach cables (DAC/AOC) compatible with the optical modules .
  2. Label and route cables: Number and label each cable for easy identification. Route cables neatly, avoiding sharp bends (minimum bend radius ~4 cm) and separating them from power or signal cables .
  3. Insert optical modules: Remove protective caps and insert the optical module into the NIC and switch port securely .
  4. Connect fiber cables: Push the LC or MPO connectors into the module until they click. Ensure duplex connections are correctly oriented .
  5. Verify connection: Power on the server and switch, then test connectivity (e.g., ping the peer device). Check that the link is active and the cable is intact .
