Check port status on fiber optic switch

You can check fiber optic switch ports by using CLI commands to view interface status, transceiver details, and optical metrics, or via a management dashboard with Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM).

CLI-Based Methods for Cisco Switches

  1. Connect to the switch using a console cable, SSH, or Telnet, and log in with your credentials .
  2. Enter privileged EXEC mode by typing enable and providing the enable password .
  3. View interface status: Use show interface status to see all ports, including fiber interfaces. Look for ports labeled "Fiber" or "Gi" (Gigabit Ethernet) and check if they are "up" or "down" .
  4. Check detailed interface information: Use show interface to see speed, duplex, and error counters .
  5. Inspect transceiver details: Use show interfaces transceiver detail or show interface transceiver detail to view Tx/Rx power, temperature, voltage, and bias current .
  6. Verify SFP inventory: show inventory lists installed SFPs with part numbers, serial numbers, and detection status .
  7. Troubleshoot errors: Check for err-disabled ports or unsupported transceivers using show logging | include .

Digital Optical Monitoring (DOM) for Meraki Switches

For Cisco Meraki switches (MS series), DOM provides real-time monitoring of fiber optic transceivers :

  • Navigate to Switching > Monitor > Switches, select a switch, and click the Ports tab.
  • Click on an operational SFP port to view metrics such as transmit power, receive power, temperature, voltage, and laser bias current.
  • Historical data can be viewed in charts, showing median, max, and min values, along with threshold alerts. DOM metrics are automatically updated every 5 minutes once an SFP is connected.

Physical Inspection and Connectivity Verification

  • Visual inspection: Check for bent or broken connectors, loose cables, or dust on fiber connectors .
  • Link verification: Connect a fiber cable and confirm the port status changes to "up". Use a fiber optic power meter or OTDR to measure optical power and detect faults .

Fibre Channel Switches (Cisco MDS)

For MDS Fibre Channel switches, you can use commands to check port and SFP status :

  • show interface for operational state and speed.
  • show interface for detailed optical module info, including Tx/Rx power and wavelength.
  • show logged-in devices and show registered devices to verify connectivity.
  • show npv or show vsan to check port associations and fabric configuration.

By combining CLI commands, DOM monitoring, and physical inspection, you can comprehensively assess the status and health of fiber optic switch ports, identify issues, and ensure proper connectivity.
