Standards for incoming and outgoing lines of distribution boxes

Incoming and outgoing lines in distribution boxes must follow strict standards for spacing, sealing, earthing, and protective device coordination to ensure safety and compliance with national regulations.

Incoming Lines

Cable Entry and Openings: Distribution boxes should have reserved openings or knockouts for incoming cables, sized according to the cable cross-section (typically 25–150 sq. mm) and equipped with seals that meet Class 3 sealing requirements after installation . The openings must allow proper routing without sharp bends to prevent insulation damage . Busbar and Protective Devices: Incoming lines are usually connected to a main busbar or incomer device such as a Switch Disconnector, MCCB, or RCD. The busbar must provide adequate clearance from the enclosure to prevent arcing and comply with applicable IS/IEC standards . The incoming device should have sufficient breaking capacity to handle prospective fault currents and provide backup protection for outgoing circuits . Earthing: A main earthing terminal must be welded to the box structure, matched to the largest earthing conductor, and all metallic parts of the box must be bonded to ensure continuity . Protective earthing busbars should be color-coded yellow and green with PE markings.

Outgoing Lines

Outgoing Cable Connections: Outgoing lines are connected to outgoing feeders via MCCBs, MCBs, or RCDs. Each outgoing circuit should have a dedicated protective device, and the neutral conductor must be supported on insulating supports with proper lugs . Spacing and Clearance: The internal layout must maintain sufficient spacing between incoming and outgoing lines to prevent overheating and allow safe maintenance. Horizontal and vertical clearances should comply with design drawings and national standards . Sealing and Protection: Outgoing cable entries should also be sealed with appropriate grommets or gland plates to maintain IP protection (commonly IP-55 for outdoor boxes) and prevent ingress of dust, water, or vermin . Coordination with Protective Devices: Outgoing circuits must be coordinated with the incoming device to ensure proper fault protection. Only faults within the same circuit should be considered for disconnection, and devices must comply with standards such as IS 13947 or BS EN 60898 .

General Installation Guidelines

  • Distribution boxes should be installed straight and firmly, with fixed boxes mounted 1.3–1.5 m above ground and mobile boxes 0.6–1.5 m above ground .
  • Distance between a distribution box and a switch box should not exceed 30 m, and horizontal distance to fixed equipment should not exceed 3 m .
  • All metallic components, including doors and frames, must be reliably connected to the earthing system using tinned copper braided straps .
  • Boxes should allow easy access for maintenance, with removable gland plates and sufficient internal space for cable routing and device installation . By following these standards, incoming and outgoing lines in distribution boxes will ensure safe operation, compliance with electrical codes, and protection against electrical faults.
