Composition of Equipment Distribution Box

A distribution box contains protective devices, busbars, neutral and earth bars, isolators, and sometimes monitoring components to safely distribute electrical power to multiple circuits.

Core Components

1. Incoming Line Part: This is where the main power enters the distribution box. It may consist of a single incoming line or multiple lines, such as a normal supply and a backup supply. The incoming line is typically protected by a main circuit breaker, which is rated for the system's current and breaking capacity . 2. Main Switch/Isolator: Provides a way to disconnect the entire distribution box from the power source for maintenance or emergency purposes. In dual-power systems, a dual power switch can automatically switch to a backup supply if the main supply fails . 3. Circuit Breakers (MCBs, MCCBs): Protect individual circuits from overloads and short circuits. Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) are common in residential and light commercial applications, while Molded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs) are used for higher current industrial circuits . 4. Residual Current Devices (RCCBs/RCBOs): Detect leakage currents to prevent electric shocks and enhance safety. RCBOs combine overcurrent protection with residual current detection . 5. Busbars: Metal strips that conduct electricity within the box, serving as central connection points for all outgoing circuits. Phase busbars distribute live current, while neutral and earth bars provide return paths and grounding . 6. Fuses and Surge Protective Devices (SPDs): Fuses provide additional protection against overcurrent, while SPDs protect equipment from voltage spikes and lightning surges . 7. Indication Lights and Monitoring Units: Visual indicators show the status of the mains supply. Advanced or smart distribution boxes may include energy monitoring units and communication modules for real-time data collection and remote control . 8. Enclosure: Made from corrosion-resistant materials such as polycarbonate, ASA, or epoxy-coated stainless steel. The enclosure protects internal components from dust, moisture, impact, and environmental stress, and is rated according to IP standards for ingress protection .

  • Transfer Switches: For systems with backup generators, automatic or manual transfer switches shift the load between power sources .
  • Control Components: Relays, contactors, and timers may be included in control distribution boxes for industrial automation .
