A distribution box, also called a distribution board or panel, serves as the central hub for distributing electricity to various circuits in a building. It houses circuit breakers (MCBs), residual current devices (RCCBs), bus bars, neutral and earth bars, and sometimes meter sockets, depending on the system design . Its main purpose is to protect circuits from overloads and short circuits while allowing safe distribution of power.

Typical Wiring Connection Method

  1. Main Supply Connection
    • The incoming phase (live) and neutral wires from the main supply are connected to the main MCB or main switch.
    • In single-phase systems, a double-pole MCB is commonly used as the main switch, rated around 63A for domestic installations .
  2. RCCB Installation
    • The output of the main MCB is connected to the input of the RCCB, which provides protection against leakage currents and electric shocks.
    • RCCBs are typically rated at 30mA for domestic use and should match the main MCB's current rating .
  3. Distribution to Individual Circuits
    • The output of the RCCB is connected to single-pole MCBs for individual loads such as lighting, sockets, or appliances.
    • For special high-power loads, double-pole MCBs may be used.
    • Each MCB output is connected to the respective load, with the neutral wire connected to the neutral bus bar and the earth wire to the earth bus bar .
  4. Bus Bars and Terminal Blocks
    • Neutral and earth bus bars distribute the neutral and earth connections to all circuits.
    • Proper labeling of terminals and color-coded wires ensures clarity and safety .
  5. Load Balancing and Phase Connection
    • In multi-phase systems, loads should be balanced across phases to prevent overloading.
    • Single-line diagrams are used for system-level understanding, while detailed wiring schematics show terminal numbers, conductor sizes, and cable routing .

Safety and Standards

  • Always turn off the main power supply before wiring.
  • Follow IEC 61439 for low-voltage switchgear and IEC 60364 for electrical installations to ensure compliance .
  • Maintain proper IP ratings for the enclosure to protect against dust and moisture.
  • Use version-controlled diagrams with clear legends, component identifiers, and revision notes for future maintenance .
