I can t access the internet even though my fiber optic cable is connected to the router

If your router is connected to a fiber optic cable but you have no internet, the issue is often due to configuration errors, ISP settings, or hardware connections.

Step 1: Verify ISP Service and Outages

Before troubleshooting your equipment, confirm that your internet service is active. Check your ISP's website, social media, or contact support to ensure there are no outages in your area. Even if your router shows a connection, the ISP may not have provisioned your fiber service correctly .

Step 2: Check Physical Connections

  • Ensure the fiber optic cable is securely connected to the ONT (Optical Network Terminal) and the router's WAN port.
  • Use the correct Ethernet cable (often yellow or grey) from the ONT to the router's WAN port .
  • Inspect cables for damage or loose connections .

Step 3: Restart Devices

  • Power off the ONT, wait 30 seconds, then power it back on.
  • Restart your router after the ONT is fully online.
  • Reboot your computer or device to refresh network settings .

Step 4: Verify Router Configuration

  • Check if your router is set to the correct connection type. Fiber ISPs often require PPPoE, static IP, or dynamic IP. Using the wrong type can prevent internet access .
  • Enter your ISP-provided username and password if PPPoE is required.
  • Ensure DNS and gateway settings match your ISP's instructions.
  • If using a static IP, confirm the IP, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS are correct .

Step 5: Test Direct Connection

  • Connect a computer directly to the ONT using an Ethernet cable.
  • If the computer cannot access the internet, the issue may be with the ISP or ONT configuration rather than your router .

Step 6: Reset Network Settings

  • On your device, forget the network and reconnect.
  • On the router, consider a factory reset if configuration errors persist, then re-enter ISP settings .

Step 7: Check Router and Device Indicators

  • Router lights: WAN/Internet light should be green or blinking steadily. Red or off lights indicate a connection problem .
  • ONT lights: Ensure the optical signal and internet indicators are active.

Step 8: Contact ISP Support

If all steps fail, contact your ISP. Fiber installations sometimes require activation or MAC address registration. Provide them with your router and ONT details to verify proper provisioning . Following these steps systematically usually resolves the “connected but no internet” issue with fiber optic setups.
