Only a small portion of the light from the multimode source enters the single-mode core, resulting in high attenuation, frequent link drops, and unreliable network performance . This setup is generally not recommended for production networks. Even short links may experience errors and unstable connectivity.
In some cases, mode-conditioning cables can be used to adapt multimode devices to single-mode fiber for temporary or non-critical links . These cables help align the light path to reduce differential mode delay and signal loss, but they do not fully eliminate the inherent limitations.
