Purpose and Function

A pigtail syphon is used to protect pressure gauges from hot fluids such as steam or superheated vapors. The coiled tube traps a small amount of liquid, creating a thermal barrier that absorbs and dissipates heat, preventing direct contact between the hot medium and the gauge's sensitive components. This helps avoid inaccurate readings, internal damage, or gauge failure .

Design and Installation

Pigtail syphons are typically made of stainless steel or mild steel and are formed in a circular or coiled shape. They have straight ends with male threads for connecting to a pressure gauge and a gauge cock (ball valve), which allows isolation of the gauge for maintenance without depressurizing the system . There are two common types of syphons:

• Ring or pigtail type: Best for horizontal pipelines with sufficient space above the pipe.
• U-type: Suitable for vertical pipelines or horizontal pipelines with limited space . During installation, the syphon is often filled with water or another suitable liquid to enhance the thermal barrier effect and improve protection against high temperatures .
