Role Overview

A fiber optic cable operator is responsible for connecting optical equipment using fiber optic patch cords (also called patch cables or fiber jumpers) and managing the routing of fiber optic cables in data centers, telecommunications networks, and FTTH deployments . Their work ensures minimal signal loss, proper network organization, and long-term reliability.

Key Responsibilities

1. Installation and Routing Operators identify optical cross-connects, server rooms, and splitters, then patch from the splitter port to the user's fiber cable port following work orders . Proper routing requires maintaining a minimum bend radius (typically 400mm) and avoiding twists or excessive loops . Patch cables should be neatly arranged inside Optical Distribution Frames (ODFs) and not left hanging or routed externally . 2. Connector Handling Operators work with various connector types:

  • LC, SC, FC, ST connectors depending on equipment and application .
  • Ensure connectors are clean using lint-free pads, isopropyl alcohol, or fiber cleaning kits to prevent signal degradation .
  • Match connector polish types (PC, UPC, APC) to minimize back reflection and insertion loss . 3. Cable Management Operators manage patch cord lengths, typically allowing a small surplus (no more than 500mm), and avoid connecting two patch cables with unauthorized flanges . They also ensure cables are labeled correctly for easy identification and future maintenance . 4.
