How to splice the drop cable in an optical fiber splice package

Splicing a drop cable involves carefully accessing the backbone cable, isolating the drop fibers, and joining them to the drop cable using either fusion or mechanical splicing for a low-loss, permanent connection.

Step 1: Prepare the Cable for Midspan Access

Begin by identifying the location where the drop cable will branch from the main backbone. Remove a short section of the outer jacket and strength members to expose the buffer tubes. For loose tube cables, locate the reversal point of the helical winding to make unwinding the tubes neat and reduce bending stress. Use ripcords to remove the jacket cleanly, ensuring the tubes remain straight as they enter the splice closure ( ).

After splicing, test the optical continuity and signal loss using an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) or power meter. Verify that the splice meets the required attenuation specifications before finalizing the closure ( ).
