Composite Optical Cable Splicing and Stripping Techniques

Composite optical cables are stripped and spliced using a combination of mechanical or fusion splicing techniques, with careful preparation of the fiber ends and removal of protective layers to ensure low-loss, reliable connections.

Stripping Composite Optical Cables

  1. Remove the outer jacket and armor: Use a cable stripper to carefully peel off the outer plastic or armored layers without damaging the inner fibers. For composite cables, this may include multiple layers of protective sheaths and aramid yarns .
  2. Expose buffer tubes and fibers: Strip the buffer tubes to access the individual fibers. Typical stripping lengths range from 3–5 cm for single fibers, and 50–100 cm for the outer cable jacket depending on the splice closure .
  3. Clean water-blocking gel: If the cable contains gel, carefully remove it using a lint-free cloth with a small amount of high-purity alcohol (99% isopropyl recommended) to avoid contamination or damage to the fiber coating .
  4. Strip the fiber coating: Use a mechanical fiber stripper to remove the protective coating from the fiber. Minimize the number of passes to prevent surface flaws that could weaken the fiber .

Preparing Fibers for Splicing

  1. Insert fiber protection sleeves: Place sleeves on the fibers before stripping to protect the bare fiber during handling and splicing .
  2. Clean the fiber ends: Wipe the stripped fiber with alcohol and a dust-free cloth to remove debris and ensure a clean end-face .
  3. Cleaving: Use a fiber cleaver to cut the fiber end precisely. Proper cleaving is critical for low-loss splicing .

Splicing Methods

Fusion Splicing

  • Process: Align the cleaved fiber ends in a fusion splicer, which uses an electric arc to melt and fuse the fibers into a continuous optical path .
  • Advantages: Produces the lowest signal loss (typically <0.1 dB) and minimal back reflection, ideal for long-haul or high-performance networks .
  • Requirements: Fusion splicer, fiber cleaver, alcohol, dust-free cloth, and fiber protection sleeves .

Mechanical Splicing

  • Process: Align fibers in a mechanical splice housing with an index-matching gel bridging the gap between fiber ends .
  • Advantages: Faster, requires less specialized equipment, and allows temporary or emergency connections. Typical loss ranges from 0.2–0.75 dB .
  • Use Cases: Short-distance, multimode fibers, or situations where quick restoration is needed .

  • Always handle fibers with care to avoid contamination or micro-cracks.
  • Use lint-free cloths and high-purity alcohol for cleaning.
  • Minimize passes with stripping tools to preserve fiber strength.
  • Test splices with an OTDR or other optical testing equipment to verify low-loss connections .
  • Dispose of fiber scraps safely to prevent injury . By following these steps, composite optical cables can be stripped and spliced efficiently, ensuring reliable, low-loss connections suitable for both permanent installations and temporary repairs.
