Checking power loss with an optical power meter

Power loss in a fiber optic link is determined by measuring the optical power at the input and output of the fiber and calculating the difference in dB.

Equipment Needed

To measure fiber loss accurately, you need:

  • Optical power meter: Measures light strength in dBm or dB.
  • Light source: Provides a stable optical signal at the appropriate wavelength (850/1300 nm for multimode, 1310/1550 nm for single-mode fibers) .
  • Launch and receive cables: Standard patch cords to connect the source and meter.
  • Connector cleaning tools: Lint-free wipes or click-to-clean tools to prevent measurement errors .

Step-by-Step Procedure

  1. Prepare the Equipment
    • Turn on the optical power meter and allow it to warm up for 1–2 minutes for stable readings .
    • Set the meter to the wavelength matching the light source to ensure accurate detection .
  2. Clean Connectors
    • Clean all fiber connectors and mating adapters to remove dust or debris, which can significantly affect readings .
  3. Establish a Reference Measurement
    • Connect a short reference patchcord to the light source.
    • Measure the optical power at the end of this patchcord with the power meter. This is your reference power (P1) .
  4. Measure the Fiber Under Test
    • Disconnect the reference patchcord and connect the fiber link you want to test.
    • At the far end of the fiber, attach the power meter and record the measured power (P2) .
  5. Calculate Power Loss
    • The insertion loss of the fiber is calculated as: Loss (dB) = P1 (dBm) − P2 (dBm)
    • For example, if P1 = -3.0 dBm and P2 = -6.5 dBm, the fiber loss is 3.5 dB .
    • Many meters have a “set reference” function to automatically display relative loss in dB.

Measurement Methods

  • Single-ended loss measurement: Uses only the launch cable; measures loss due to connectors and fiber segments individually. Best for patch cords .
  • Double-ended loss measurement: Uses both launch and receive cables; measures total loss including all connectors and splices in the fiber link .

Tips for Accurate Measurements

  • Always match the wavelength of the meter to the light source.
  • Clean connectors before each measurement to avoid errors.
  • Calibrate the power meter regularly to maintain accuracy .
  • Ensure the test environment and fiber conditions mimic actual operating conditions for realistic results . By following these steps, you can reliably determine the optical power loss in a fiber optic system, helping to identify weak points, verify installation quality, and maintain network performance.
