Fusion splicing of fiber optic pigtails involves precise preparation, alignment, and melting of the fiber ends to form a seamless, low-loss connection.

Step 1: Prepare the Fiber

  • Strip the fiber coating using a specialized fiber stripper to expose the bare glass without nicking or scratching it .
  • Clean the exposed fiber with lint-free wipes and 99% isopropyl alcohol until it is free of dust, oils, or debris .
  • Cleave the fiber using a high-precision cleaver to create a flat, 90-degree end face. A perfect cleave is critical for a successful melt and low insertion loss .

Step 2: Load Fibers into the Fusion Splicer

  • Place the incoming trunk fiber on one side and the pigtail fiber on the other .
  • Ensure the fiber ends are close but not touching. Modern splicers use core alignment cameras to locate the fiber cores for precise positioning .
  • Inspect the fiber ends for dust or jagged edges; re-clean or re-cleave if necessary.

Step 3: Perform the Fusion (Melting)

  • Start the splicer, which performs a brief test arc to burn off microscopic dust .
  • The splicer then generates a controlled electric arc between electrodes to melt the fiber ends together, forming a single continuous glass strand .
  • The fusion process is automatic, but proper alignment and clean fiber ends are essential to achieve minimal insertion loss (typically 0.01–0.05 dB) .

Step 4: Protect the Splice

  • Slide a heat-shrink splice protection sleeve over the joint before splicing .
  • After fusion, move the sleeve over the splice and bake it in the splicer's internal oven. This creates a rigid, waterproof shield that protects the fragile glass junction .

Step 5: Test the Splice

  • Use an OTDR (Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer) or power meter to verify the splice quality and ensure low signal loss .
  • Proper testing confirms the integrity of the connection and ensures reliable network performance. By following these steps carefully, the pigtail fiber is permanently fused to the main fiber, providing a durable, low-loss optical connection suitable for data centers, telecom networks, and FTTH installations .
