This course presents an assessment of the knowledge and skills possessed for performing
OTDR calibration relies on reference artefacts that simulate fiber characteristics for accurate measurement of attenuation, backscatter, and uniformity. The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the UK provides single-mode and multi-mode fiber standards calibrated for total attenuation, attenuation coefficient uniformity, and optical length, with typical uncertainties of ±0.009 dB/km and ±0.1–0.3 m for length measurements . NPL also offers return loss artefacts at -30 dB, -40 dB, and -50 dB, and recirculating optical delay lines to generate calibration features along the OTDR distance scale . These artefacts are transportable and suitable for international use, making them ideal for Northern European applications.
